Good to Know — New Zealand Edition

Getting around

Driving is on the left. Allow about 1.5 hours per 100 km, plus stops.

Drive to the conditions

One-lane bridges, winding roads, and snow or ice on passes in winter.

Freedom camping

Many spots are free, but most need a certified self-contained vehicle. Check the signs — fines are steep.

Pack it out

There are no bins in the bush. Take your rubbish with you.

Pack a layer

Weather can change quickly, even in summer. Pack a warm layer and a rain jacket.

Booking ahead

Popular tours and activities can book out — reserve the ones you need.

Declare it

Declare food, plants and outdoor gear when you arrive. Clean boots help.

Check as you go

Opening hours, ferry times and road conditions can change. Confirm the ones your day depends on.
